The Grayson County High School Marching Band won first place and the title of Grand Champions in two weekend competitions this month.

The band’s most recent victory took place this past Saturday, September 14 during a competition at Russellville’s Rhea Stadium.

In that competition, the Marching Cougars won first place in AAAAA, best color guard, best percussion, and were named the Grand Champions, which signifies they were the highest overall scoring band at the competition, regardless of class size, according to Assistant Director of Bands Ashley Bell.

Earlier in the day on Sept. 14, the Cougars competed at Butler County and placed third in their class behind Eastern High School, who placed first, and Muhlenberg County, who placed second.

“Both bands are former state finalists and very tough competition,” Bell said.

The Cougars finished third overall in the entire Butler County competition, as well.

The GCHS Marching Cougars claimed their first victory at the Franklin-Simpson High School Competition, held at FSHS in Franklin, KY on Saturday, Sept. 7.

In the Franklin-Simpson competition, the Cougars won first place in AAAAA and best percussion and were named the Grand Champions.

“We are simply thrilled with our great start to the season,” Bell said. “We have an unbelievable group of dedicated young men and women, as well as parents, and we’ve had our most successful beginning to the season since [Head Band Director] Mr. [Aaron] Bell and I have arrived.”

The GCHS Marching Cougars’ show is titled “Black Swan” and is based on Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet, “Swan Lake..”

The show features baritone soloist and GCHS Senior Zach Wagner, and starting this week, GCHS Senior Ashton Lindsey will be added as ballerina for the show, Ashley Bell said.

Aaron and Ashley Bell are assisted in directing the GCHS band by Stacy French, Nick Price (percussion), Stephen Ferguson, and Jesse Renfrow (color guard).

Dates and locations for the GCHS Marching Cougars’ upcoming competitions are as follows:

Saturday, Sept. 21 - Eastern High School.

Saturday, Sept. 28 - Nelson County.

Saturday, October 12 - Twin Lakes Marching Band Classic, which will be a home show at GCHS.

Saturday, Oct. 19 - Regional Competition at Muhlenberg County.

Saturday, Oct. 26 - State Semi-Finals and Finals at Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium at the University of Louisville.
