The Durant Lions (1-1) will host its home opener against another rival the Ada Cougars (1-1) this Friday at Paul Laird Field.

The Cougars are coming off a 42-6 thumping of Idabel last week and the Lions squeezed by Ardmore 9-7 in a defensive struggle.

Durant had to deal with the speed of Ardmore, this week they will have to hold back a hard-noise smash-mouth football team in the Cougars. Ada had slippery fingers against Ardmore, gifting them four turnovers and the win.

The Lions defense has been solid this year with a strong defensive line play and creating turnovers. Durant has caused six turnovers in two games.

“Ada is very talented and well coached. They have a lot guys from last year when they went to the State Semi-Finals,” said head coach Bryon Cordell. “They are solid in all phases of the game…just a all around solid football team.”

While the running game is the bread and butter of the Cougars, they also have a 6’ 8” weapon at wider receiver and quarterback that can get him the ball.

“On defense we have to our job and minimize big plays and take them out of long drives,” said Cordell.

The Cougars defense will be a tough foe. The Cougars run, “A 3-3 stack defense like ours. They got some talented players that are well coached on defense,” said Cordell.

Minus the speed of Ardmore, the Cougars still pose a threat on the offensive side of the ball and they are “fundamentally sound team.” The Cougars will run different formations to try to keep the Lions of guard.

“They run a lot of different things. They run the Spread, “I” formation, One Back Double Tight and we have to prepare for all of that,” said Cordell. “They want to be a power football team.”

The injury list isn’t long for Lions, but they did lose a prize senior player as Connor Ruminar is out for the year due to a concussion.

“I feel for Conner. He is a great young man who sold his heart and soul for this football team. He was a leader through hard work and dedication and we are going to miss him. But the key here is that his health comes first.” said Cordell.

The Durant vs Ada kick-off time is 7:30. Before the game, the DHS will inducted its newest Hall of Fame members.
