A 43-year-old Altus resident, mother of four, personal trainer, and full-time college student, recalled watching videos on YouTube.com of body building figure competitions when she first started out only four months ago. She noted every detail of those competing, followed by an interview with Mike Newman of Inside Natural Body Building. She could hardly believe that after her success in Kansas City last weekend, there she was, standing next to him, while being interviewed herself.
“It’s very exciting,” said Danica Atchley. “It was so neat.”
Danica Atchley, won her Masters Pro Card at the NANBF Natural KC Classic and IFPA Pro International in Kansas City last Saturday, Sept. 14. In the Pro Qualifier event, Atchley took home three first-place trophies for “35 and Over”, “40 and Over”, and “Open Short” categories. Winning the the “40 and Over” category earned her an IFPA Pro Card to now compete at the professional level in figure competitions. She came in 2nd place “Overall.”
Atchley stated she was amazed at having competed with younger females and it being her first Pro Qualifier, and still coming that close to winning first place.
“There is something about us 40 and overs,” she said. “A lot of us tend to out do younger women because we have muscle maturity.”
Atchely began entering and winning Naturals Figure competitions just four months ago.
“I’ve been lifting weights for most of my adult life,” Atchley said, “And I would always pick up copies of figure and fit magazines and flip to the back to see the contestants and thought, ‘One day I could do that.”
After having trained with weights for 10 years, Atchely decided in January to find a coach to help her push closer to her goal. She began working with 12-year bikini and body building coach Steve Clausen, who is also the official trainer of the NBA Oklahoma City Thunder Girls, and started training for the Tulsa Naturals held this past June. In her first ever competition, Atchley won first place in “35 and Over”, “Open Short”, and “Overall.” She also won the title of “Miss Figure Oklahoma.”
Atchley then entered into the OKC Classic in August, and won first place in “Figure Open ”, “40 and Over”, and won “Best Poser.”
Atchley attributes a lot of her success to working with Clausen. “I pose every day, and not just with his classes,” she said. “You can have the best body out there, but if you don’t know how to pose you won’t win.”
Atchley is a personal trainer at The Loft in Altus, and is currently working toward a Fitness Management Degree at Cameron University with an expected graduation date of Spring 2015.
Her four kids, Brooke, 21; Gage, 13; Noel, 12; and daughter Jessi, 10, have been very supportive of her competing.
“They just cheer me on. They are great,” she said. “And especially my little one was screaming her head off from the audience.”
Atchley will be competing in the upcoming St. Louis Gateway Naturals on Oct. 5.
