A Senate Review by Senator Josh Brecheen

October 22, 2013

This is a letter I received from Shelley Harrison, a constituent in our Senate district, to show how Obamacare is going to affect certain Oklahomans. This is a complicated and confusing issue and the partisan politics surrounding it doesn’t help anyone understand it any better. The best way to understand how Obamacare is going to affect us is to hear directly from individuals negatively impacted by this system. I hope this letter from Assurant Health insurance company would bring some context to this national issue that has led to the shutdown of our federal government.
Sen. Brecheen,
Here is the letter I received regarding the Obamacare mandate that I must carry maternity, mental health, pediatric dental and vision care. I recently renewed my insurance policy and was told I would have to carry maternity coverage. I explained to my insurance company that I was a grandmother and that I could not medically even have children anymore. They stated that it was part of the Obamacare mandate and that it didn’t matter, my insurance policy had to reflect maternity coverage.
I am first a Christian … a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a small business owner. I live within a budget, and run my finances and investments with a strong mindset of values, so that I can insure that my home and business are successful and financially stable. With my recent insurance renewal, my premiums went from $287.09 to $382.12 per month. I am now paying for the addition of maternity coverage that I WILL NEVER USE! How does this make any sense? I had insurance before Obamacare/Affordable Health Care Act, and paid exactly for what I needed. Now, I am paying extra for something I will never get to use. This goes against my good judgment and investment mindset, yet, I do not have a choice!
I have received a new letter from my insurance company stating that by July 18, 2014, I must also have the additional coverage of mental health, pediatric dental and vision. I can only imagine what my premiums could look like in the future! How in the world are we supposed to “afford” these mandates? I am concerned and angry that our government has trampled over the American people’s rights and that this so called Affordable Health Care Act is placing these mandates that are absolutely ridiculous!
I am attaching a copy of my current letter from my insurance company for your review.

If you have received similar letters from your insurance company, please contact your Congressman so we can help educate others about this detrimental system. Again, the President keeps proclaiming his system will provide FREE healthcare to all Americans but NOTHING is free. This letter is evidence of that – why would a grandmother, or anyone else who is not the soul guardian of minors, need to carry maternity or pediatric dental benefits? This program is called the Affordable Healthcare Act but there is nothing affordable about it as shown by this case and many others.
