COLBERT - The Lady Dawgs of Calera handed the Lady Leopards their first loss on Tuesday in a 53-50 contest which came down to the wire.

Colbert missed three of four free throws in the final seven seconds of the game, while Calera scored nine of their 17 fourth-quarter points from the line.

Calera Coach LaChelle Brown gave kudos to Raylee Rogers (15 points) for streaking to the basket for a late layup which broke a 49-all tie.

“I’m just extremely proud of the whole team. It took everybody,” she said. “That layup for Raylee was big, especially with four fouls. And Micaela (Curtman) is small but she plays big.”

Taylor Pickett led all scorers with 17 points, including a rare four-point play in a 7-0 start to the game. Curtman and Madi Robinson had six each while Maddie Partain scored nine for Calera (9-2).

Colbert came back from an 11-point deficit during an 18-5 run to take the lead in the fourth quarter. But a steal-and-score from Rogers tied the game at 42. It would go back and forth until the end.

Samantha Cummins led Colbert (5-1) with 16 points, and Haylie McGowan added 14. Rachel Anders scored eight, Taytiana Gray fouled out with seven points, and Maddison Poteet had five.
