One person was killed and another was flown to a hospital after a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.
Billy McCarver, 76, Wapanucka, was dead at the scene of the 10:39 a.m. crash on Highway 22 west of Caddo, according to OHP.
McCarver was driving a Ford Mustang westbound when an eastbound Chevrolet pickup driven by Cody Elderige, 24, Caddo, traveled left of center and struck McCarver’s Mustang head on. Elderige, who was pinned in his pickup before being freed by Durant firefighters, was flown by medical helicopter to Plano Medical Center in Plano, Texas, where he was treated and released for leg injuries.
Both drivers wore seat belts, according to Trooper B.J. Keeling’s report. Elderige driving left of center was cited as the cause of the crash. OHP Lt. Scott Hampton and Trooper Brad Dansby assisted in the investigation. The Caddo police and fire departments and the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.
In other news, Durant firefighters were dispatched at 8:09 p.m. Wednesday to a vehicle fire at Arkansas Street and Radio Road. When they arrived five minutes later, the Ford Expedition was fully engulfed in flames inside the engine compartment. There was no one inside the vehicle and firefighters put out the fire.
They remained on scene until 8:36 when a wrecker arrived to tow the vehicle.
