The Durant Lion junior varsity baseball squad got off to a strong start in sweeping a season-opening doubleheader from Denison Saturday afternoon at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex.
Terrific early pitching and solid hitting keyed the 9-3 and 5-0 victories.
In the opener, Cody Jones yielded just one run on three hits with five strikeouts in four innings for the pitching victory. Brayden Green came on and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth to record the save.
The Lions scored all the runs they would need in the first inning, plating six, spurred by a leadoff triple by Matthew Knox. Cooper webb and Dakota Finley also chipped in RBI singles.
Webb finished with two hits, including a double, and drove in two. Knox had one hit and scored twice, Jake Smith and Finley contributed RBI singles and Green also chipped in a hit.
Brody Morgan was the pitching stalwart of game two, allowing only one hit with two strikeouts and a walk over four innings. Dylon Polson also tossed one frame of scoreless relief.
The Lions pushed across three runs in the first on RBI hits from Finley, Morgan and Justin Marksberry. They finished off the scoring with two more in the third as Finley, Morgan and Polson all had hits.
The JV Lions will host Whitesboro, Texas in a twinbill Monday at the Multi-Sports Complex.
