Mustangs edge Caddo in Rock Creek Tourney

BOKCHITO - The Rock Creek Mustangs tangled with the Caddo Bruins in a late game Thursday night at the Rock Creek baseball tournament.


The Mustangs held off Caddo to grab a 9-6 win to advance to the winners bracket. Today, Rock Creek will face-off against Tupelo at 4 p.m. and the Bruins look to beat Wright City in the noon game.


Josh Eiler took the mound for Rock Creek. Eiler pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts and got the win. Caddo’s Tristen Paris pitched a complete game and had three strikeouts in the loss.


Eiler went straight to work on the Caddo batters and struck-out the side in the top of the first inning. Then Rock Creek drew first blood in the bottom half of the inning.


Rock Creek’s Tyler Thompson got on base due to an error and Zack Cook got an infield single. Then Eiler got on base on an error and Thompson raced home for the game’s first score. Two more Mustang baserunners scored on sac-flies by Noe Alaniz and Bronson Burns that gave Rock Creek a 3-0 lead.


Eiler would once again sit down Bruin batters as he struck-out the side in the second inning. Then the Mustangs put up four more runs to extend their lead.


With two Mustang baserunners in scoring position, Cook hammered the ball into the outfield wall for a RBI triple. One runner scored and the other was thrown out at home plate. Then Eiler hit a a RBI single and Nash Hestily crossed home plate on an error. Rock Creek led 7-0 after two innings.


Caddo bats came alive and started to chip away at Rock Creek’s lead. The Bruins’ defense kept Rock Creek scoreless in innings three through five.


In the third inning, Caddo’s Patrick Jones started with a lead-off double and later scored when Tanner Grace hit an RBI double. Then Caddo put two more runs in the fourth inning when Colton Ledford hit a 2 RBI double to cut into Rock Creek’s lead 7-3. In the fifth inning, Caddo put a run on an error and in the sixth inning, Grace and Paris both hit RBIs and Caddo trailed 7-6.


Then in the bottom of the sixth inning Rock Creek closed out the game with an RBI from Tanner McCann and later scored on an error to give the Mustangs the win.


Other games today are: Smithville vs. Thackerville at 2 p.m. and Rattan vs. Caney at 6 p.m.
