Veterans, friends and family are invited to the 90th birthday party for Don James at 1 p.m. April 25, to be held at the Masonic Hall, 3901 W. University Blvd. in Durant.
There will be no long speeches or required program and those attending may stay as long as they want No gifts, please. James said that he has you as a friend and that is all he wants.
James is a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific Theater 1942 to 1945. He was in light ordnance as a Browning Automatic Rifleman (BAR).
He fought at Tarawa where he was wounded by an anti-personnel landmine and received 14 abrasions on the right hip and right leg.
He also received burns as a result of white phosphorous while trying to save two sailors and two marines from a cargo barge.
Besides this catastrophe, he was also aboard a ship that was hit by a Japanese torpedo. A US Navy Aircraft Carrier rescued him and the others. Then, he was taken to Rabaul.
