Colbert police warn residents of scam

July 19, 2014

The Colbert Police Department is warning residents about a telephone scam from someone claiming to represent the town’s water department.

According to police, the caller attempts to persuade citizens to pay their water bills over the phone using a credit or debit card.

“The city of Colbert is not set up to handle credit cards or debit cards, so this is a scam,” said Colbert Police Chief Jeff Goerke. “Someone is calling around, trying to get people to give them their information, so they can use it for other purposes.”

Anyone who receives such a call is encouraged to contact police.
