Durant’s baseball team served up quite a few treats on Monday in their 8-0 run-rule win over the visiting Idabel Warriors.
Pitcher Zack Lively delivered a five-inning no-hitter in his first start for the Lions. There was also Brandon Maynard’s in-the-park home run which scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning.
“We need to pitch and play great defense and find a way to score runs, especially as young as we are,” said Durant baseball Coach Ron Norman. “We got all three of those tonight. Zach lively just did a great job on the hill of keeping them off balance. We put the ball in play enough to get them to make some errors.”
Lively struck out six, walked two and hit one Idabel batter in the senior’s first career start for the Lions. He got some highlight-reel defense out of his infielders in the late innings to keep the no-no rolling.
“They did real good, they’re young but that was textbook infielding right there,” Lively said. “I was just trying my hardest to throw strikes.”
With the Lions up 7-0 in the fifth and a Warrior taking a base-on-balls, substitute second baseman Cooper Webb scooped up a well-hit ball, tagged second and made the opposite-side throw to Alex Brooks at first for the double play.
Shortstop Austin Joines followed with an equally impressive grab in shallow center to retire the Idabel fifth.
At the plate, Maynard collected the game’s first three RBIs on the round-tripper as well as an RBI single in the third to bring home Joines (who had reached base on a walk). Lively fanned three Warriors in the fourth to overcome a Lions fielding error.
Durant collected three hits while Idabel committed three errors in a four-run fourth inning for the 7-0 Lions lead. In the fifth, Carson Campbell reached base on an error, got to third due to a pair of hit batsmen and scored the game-ending run on a wild pitch.

The Lions (4-1, No. 10 in 5A) begin a stretch of district games on Tuesday with a visit to McAlester set for 4:30 p.m. Durant returns home on Friday against Tulsa Hale and Saturday against Tulsa Central.
Sub varsity game:
The Durant Lion sub varsity baseball squad notched a tie and a victory in two games on the road at Whitesboro, Texas Monday evening.
In the opener, the Lions got off to a fast start with two runs in the opening frame as Logan Hibbs, Justin Marksberry and Denton Comer all notched singles and Hayden Burkett added a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the five-inning contest that did not go extra innings.
Burkett fired five strong innings on the mound, allowing just two unearned runs by the Bearcats. Alex Steve contributed a big double offensively while Hunter Burkett added several outstanding catches defensively in the outfield.
The Lions were 8-3 winners in the nightcap with Steve, Josh Jackson and Drew Smith combining for the pitching victory. Steve and Jackson fired two innings apiece and Smith added a frame of relief.
Smith was also the leading hitter in the contest with a pair of singles.
