DURANT — More than within reach, the win was in their collective grasp. Not only did Durant High’s chance for victory against the Dallas Titans slip away, it was soon nowhere to be found, and even perhaps, out of earshot.
Durant High lost its first pool play game of Day 2 at the Harlene T. Gumm Fourth of July Tournament, 17-8, after leading by five runs through five innings. Larry Dyson Motors capped Friday action by improving to 3-0 in pool play with a 9-0 run-rule over Durant High. In other games; Ardmore evened its pool record to 1-1 with a 4-3 win over the Titans, Texarkana breezed through its first two games of the tournament 10-1 over Lewisville and 15-0 over Zone Club. In between, Lewisville topped Zone, 3-1.
Saturday’s results will not be available by press-time. Bracket play begins 11 a.m. with the top team from each pool taking on the other’s second-place in the semifinals. The championship finals will be on Field 1 at 1:30 p.m.
Ardmore 4, Titans 3
Ardmore opened scoring after a lead-off walk to Cody Sewell in the third, bunt single by D.J. Eppley and another bunt that resulted in two runs across on a throwing error. Trevor Raper followed with an RBI-single to give Ardmore a 3-0 lead it held until the top of the fourth.
The Titans answered after a pair of walks to Drew Gloria and Drew Wheeler in the fifth inning led to a two-out, two-run single by Ashdon Ayling.
Ardmore added insurance in the fifth with a two-out RBI-single by Billy Reinhart.
Price Buckaloo worked all but one out for the win. He gave up one run in the seventh, and the Titans put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position before Sewell took the mound and induced a groundout.
Titans 17, Durant 8
Call it: The one that got away-way-way. The Titans opened with two runs in the top of the first after back-to-back singles by Richard Tomlinson and Spencer Copeland was followed with a two-run double by Tucker Hicks.
Durant nearly missed its opportunity to answer. After a pair of infield singles by Josh Brown and Derek Haworth, the high school squad loaded the bases with a walk to Tyler Hendley. A fielder’s choice cut the first run off at the plate before a strikeout. Jordan Mobbs extended the inning with a bases-loaded walk before a grand slam by Daylan Green gave Durant the lead.
It didn’t end there. Tanner Gwinn singled and moved into scoring position on an error before an RBI-single by Ruben Ramos. Brown gave Durant a 7-2 lead with an RBI-triple.
After a scoreless second inning, the Titans got back on the board with a double by Robert Cervantes and RBI-single by Hicks. Durant answered with Jordan Mobbs working the base paths. He walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and made the score 8-3 after a balk.
Durant added only one more hit the rest of the game, but the trouble didn’t start until the sixth. Starter Brandon Bennett tossed one more out before being replaced and none of the relievers could stop the bleeding. The Titans took the lead with an eight-run sixth, and padded the total with six more in the seventh.
LDM 9, Durant High 0
Larry Dyson Motors cruised to 13-7 on the season, simply overwhelming Durant High in four innings. The American Legion squad opened scoring with a towering, three-run home run by Anthony Trevino in the first inning. After that, three consecutive walks led to Jacob Carter scoring on a passed ball, and Kenton Stanley making it, 5-0, on a wild pitch.
Durant added two more in the second after RBI-singles by Jordan Mings and Kale Palmer. Insurance came in the third when Keach Ballard singled and scored on an error. The final run came with a walk to Stanley and sacrifice fly by Ethon McBride.
Travis Caraway worked four innings for the win. He gave up two hits, fanned two and walked one. Michael Mobbs struck out one, walked one and gave up a hit in one inning of relief.
Hendley started for Durant High but was replaced by Haworth after the first inning. Haworth finished out the game, scattering six hits with one strikeout, one walk and three earned runs.
