The Durant Lion wrestling team made short work of the final home dual of the season Monday, topping Sulphur 45-12. Durant was handed two losses by fall, and all but two of the bouts were decided by fall.
Beginning with a traditional start of opening with the lower weight classes, the Lions were able to build up an 18-0 lead before the first loss came with a pin by Sulphur’s Moss over Houston Franklin at 145 pounds. From there, Durant reeled off five-straight wins for an insurmountable lead before Sulphur’s Grinstead pinned Dustin Jones in the first period.
Nate Crawford began the first wave of momentum for the Lions at 112 pounds. He led 5-0 after the first period, and worked tilts and stacks to a 14-0 lead in the second before ending his match with a pin over S. Betterton at 3:42.
At 119 pounds, Durant’s Joseph Mathis fell behind 4-3 after the first period, but took over in the second with a head-lock that led to back points and a 10-4 lead. A failed throw by Sulphur’s Flowers in the third period led to Mathis finishing off the match by fall with 44 seconds left.
The first decision of the night came at 125 pounds. Durant’s Kelten Isenberg scored first after converting a single-leg to double, but was reversed and rode out to end the period in a 2-all tie.
Sulphur’s Baton scored a reverse in the final 30 seconds of the second period, but Isenberg managed to escape and score a takedown in the final 12 seconds to take a 5-4 lead entering the third period.
The two exchanged reverses in the third period before Isenberg was cut loose to take an 8-6 inside of the last minute. He sealed the win with a double-leg for a 10-6 decision in the last 11 seconds.
Trey Bowman had another tough match at 135 pounds. He and Chris Turrobiartes exchanged a couple of glancing shot attempts, but neither could score in the first period. Turrobiartes worked from the down position to open the second and managed an escape about midway through the period for the first score. Bowman was hit with a stall warning in the closing seconds of the period. In the second frame, Bowman struggled to free himself, not getting the tying escape point until the final 20 seconds of regulation. Bowman was the aggressor in the overtime period and with 13 seconds left, won the decision working a single into a double-leg.
At 152 pounds, Robby Hirst fell behind after a quick takedown by Sulphur’s Jones. He got a reversal before an escape by Jones, but Hirst scored the next takedown and brought Jones to his back in the process. He wrapped up the bout in the first period with a pin at the 1:48 mark.
Colby Hicks had the Lions’ only other decision at 160 pounds. He scored a late takedown in the first period and rode Sulphur’s Leonard out for the remaining time. Neither grappler added points in the second period, and Hicks worked from the down position to start the third. He managed a reversal with a minute remaining and rode it out the rest of the way for the 4-0 win.
Durant’s Ryan Mitchell (171) and Jeff Smith (189) picked up forfeits before Durant’s final win of the dual. Kolten Blakley gave up a takedown in the first period, but escaped and scored on a double-leg with 44 seconds left for a 3-2 edge. After a neutral start in the second, Blakley scored on another double-leg and turned Sulphur’s Heskett late for a fall with 16 seconds left in the period.
The Lions were coming off a tournament at Bishop Kelley over the weekend where three wrestlers placed. Crawford and Bowman each finished as runners-up, while Jones took sixth at heavyweight.
Crawford won 5-0 over Phillip Schmidt of Northwest Classen in the quarterfinals, won 6-3 in overtime of the semifinals over Irwin Aldaco of Owasso and lost 3-1 in overtime of the championship finals to Broken Arrow’s Caleb Clark.
Bowman won by fall over Trey Hightower of Cleveland in the first round, won 12-3 over William Page of Coweta in the quarterfinals, won 11-9 over James Duncan of East Central in the semifinals and lost by fall to Dakoda Goins of Owasso.
Jones lost by fall to Orion Jones of Jenks in the quarters, received an injury default from John Cardenas of Northwest Classen in the first round of consolations, won by fall over Conner Vanden of Owasso in the consolation quarterfinals, lost by fall to Joe Alston of Berryhill in the consolation semi-finals and lost by fall to Anadarko’s Rudy Oheltoint in the fifth-place match.
