A local radio station has added a new holiday campaign to their calendar this year. Mix 96.1 has teamed up with Landmark Bank and Kings Daughters and Sons Nursing home to bring Santa to Seniors.
The Santa for Seniors program is geared toward everyday senior citizens living in Bryan County who utilize the Senior Citizens Center located on the corner of North 16th Avenue and Beech Street in Durant.
The program will provide these senior citizens with care package style gifts to be delivered to them during the Christmas luncheon event held at the Senior Citizen Center on December 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The luncheon is a free event that takes place every year, but this year Mix 96.1 wanted to bring something extra for the seniors.
Jay Lindly from Mix 96.1 and Landmark Bank President Daylin Hash said while there are several programs to aid children and families during the holiday season, senior citizens tend to be forgotten.
“We felt the need to do something for seniors in Durant,” said Hash, commenting that seniors could also use some cheering up this time of year.
Hash said that since this is the first year for the event, it is a learning project in which they hope to get a feel for the need in the area and grow the program as needed.
He said the best way to donate is with a monetary donation that can be made at any Landmark Bank location for the Santa for Seniors program.
Checks would be made out to Keystone Broadcasting. With this money, Kings Daughters and Sons Nursing Home can buy items needed for the gifts in bulk.
“We get more bang for the buck this way,” said Lindly.
Item donations can be made at both Durant Landmark Bank locations at 900 W. Main Street and 2611 University Boulevard or at the Mix 96.1 Station at 2803 W. University Boulevard.
Items needed include lotion, socks, mittens, sugar free cough drops, chap stick and blankets.
“These items will be wrapped and distributed December 19 at the luncheon,” said Hash.
He said the idea for the event was inspired by his grandmother and her friends at a nursing home. He revealed how her friends would be eager to visit with him when he went to see his grandmother.
Lindly said he realized that many senior citizens do not have many friends or family member to visit them. “We felt this is something we could do at least during the holiday season to impact them,” said Lindly.

Mix 96.1 also paired up with American Dream Realty Wednesday afternoon to collect toys for Toys for Tots for the second year in a row. The station was on site in the Durant Walgreens parking lot from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. collecting toys.
Those who visited the event were entered to win a 96 second shopping spree at Green Spray in Durant. Lindly said toys can still be donated to American Dream Realty located at 801 W. Main Suite B or at the radio station.
