A Plus Graphics burned Monday during a fire that is suspected of being caused by a heater or an electrical problem.

The Durant Fire Department was dispatched to the business, located at 310 N. First Ave., at 8:38 a.m., and when they arrived one minute later, thick smoke was coming from the front of the building, according to a fire department report.

Firefighters entered the building through the front door and initially had the fire under control in about 15 minutes, however, unknown to them at the time, the fire had went up into the attic area.

According to the fire department, the building had been modified with newer additions and it had two attic or crawl spaces that were covered with roofs which made the the fire difficult to reach. The original walls had also been covered with sheet metal.

Firefighters who were inside then left the building due to the fire being in the attic area, and the department went into a defensive mode to protect other buildings and vehicles. They spent a little more than two hours bringing the fire under control and another two-plus hours removing sheet metal from the walls so they could reach hidden fires and “hot spots.”

The business was owned by Joseph Al-Khateib.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by City Fire Marshal Wade Boyd, who said a heater or an electrical problem may have been the cause of the fire. Firefighters were on the scene until 2:38 p.m. Monday.
