Southeastern Oklahoma State University celebrated Founder’s Day Thursday with a presentation by a former SE instructor and the indulgence of peaches.

Students and faculty gathered in Montgomery Auditorium at 3 p.m. Thursday to hear from former instructor and author of “A History of Southeastern Oklahoma State University Since 1909,” Dr. David Norris.

Norris spoke on the importance of the Durant City Founder Dixon Durant’s cousin William Durant and the great impact he made in saving local college institutions.

After looking into the past, the audience heard from SE President Larry Minks about the goals for the future. Durant Mayor Jerry Tomlinson was also present to say a few words and read a proclamation declaring March 2014 the official month for celebrating the school’s founding.

Opening and closing the presentation was the Southeastern Chorale performing for the crowd.

To honor the school’s foundation in 1909 in a former peach orchard, a peach cook-off was also held. The cook-off consisted of three categories, pies and cobblers, jams and jellies, and cooks’ choice, which can include salsa, cakes and more.

Each dish had to contain peaches as the main ingredient. After the presentation, guests were invited to the Glen D. Johnson Student Union to listen to the school’s jazz band and sample contest entries.
