Durant Intermediate School students participated in a nutritional cooking competition “Sodexo annual Future Chefs” for the second year on Thursday.
Six students competed against each other to see who made the best sandwich this year. Any student could submit a recipe to be considered for the competition. This year, the competition had 30 healthy sandwich recipes submitted.
The winner of Thursday’s competition will be considered for one of the 27 regional finalist awards.
Regional finalists will compete to become one of five national finalists competing for public votes for on a special Future Chefs YouTube channel.
The winner of Thursday’s competition was Maddie Reyna with her “Kickin’ Chicken Wrap.” Taking second place was Garrett Mason with his “Caribbean Jerk Grilled Cheese.” The third place winner was Lauren Collins with her “Sweet Turkey Sub.”
Durant Sodexo General Manager Mark Woods said competitions like this one are important to show kids they can make healthy snacks on their own and enjoy them.
He said while kids can get away with eating unhealthy and still remain in good health, it get harder as they grow into adulthood.
He emphasized the importance of building healthy habits early so they will grow to be healthier adults.
“If we can teach them to eat healthy now, they’ll have a healthy life,” said Woods.
