The local Friends of the Library gathered with friends and family of Eleanor M. Lee to unveil a statue in her honor at the Donald W. Reynolds Community Center and Library.
Lee was one of the original members of the Friends of the Library group in Durant and served as president during the group’s early years.
Friends and family gathered last week as a bronze statue, complete a plaque dedicated to her memory, was unveiled.
The statue displays two children sitting on a park bench reading. Real life children are not discouraged from joining them at the bench.
Library employee and Friends member Angie Mullen said they have already taken pictures of children who wandered up to sit on the bench. “She loved children,” said Mullen.
Mullen said Lee was all about children and community. She revealed that Lee was not only a member of the Friends of the Library group but a member of several other community organizations as well.
Despite Lee having multiple demands on her time, Mullen said “she never missed a meeting” and was fully dedicated to all the groups she served.
Mullen said the group could not have done the things it did without the guidance of Lee. She said Lee will always be missed and remembered by the group.
