Events and demonstrations filled the day at the Choctaw Tribal Headquarters Monday as the tribe celebrated its August Heritage day.

The events were open to employees to learn more about the Choctaw tribe. Activities ran from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the headquarters on the corner of 16th Avenue and Locust Street in Durant.

Lectures by Ryan Spring, including “The Treaties” and “Light Horseman,” told about the tribe’s history while beading and stickball making demonstrations tied the past and present together.

Tribal members Brad Joe and Jared Tom demonstrated bead work while Brenner Billy demonstrated how to make a ball for stickball.

Tom and Billy also demonstrated how to play stickball on the headquarters lawn after a Choctaw dance demonstration. A drawing was also held for a back-to-school bag at the end of the day.

Employees were encouraged to wear cultural clothing to celebrate the tribe’s heritage during the day.
