The Durant High School Band has had another successful school year, receiving many awards and marching in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in St. Louis, Mo.
“The Durant High School Band earned second place and straight superior ratings at the OSSAA State Jazz Band Competition,” said DHS Band Director Chris Gregg. “This accomplishment earns us the OSSAA Super Sweepstakes Award and makes us the highest-rated overall 5A Band in the state of Oklahoma for 2013-14. I am very proud of my staff, boosters and students.”
The band was superior in all OSSAA contests, marching, concert, sight reading and jazz.
The Pride of Durant is now broken into two bands due to their size but both Mid High (mostly freshmen and sophomores) and the Varsity (some sophomores and seniors) earned these awards. This year, they numbered 144 with the Sparklers Dance Team.
The band also traveled to St. Louis over spring break to march in the St. Patrick’s Day parade and won the overall music trophy of all entries. Band members raised money through band card sales, bake sales and other fundraisers.
Next year, The Pride will be 177 members strong and growing every year. Parents and band boosters are very proud of these hardworking students and their directors.
