The Young Democrats of Southeastern are hosting a memorial event on Tuesday to honor the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Madison Williams, president of the Young Democrats, has announced that SE history professor Dr. Glen Melancon will give a brief presentation at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Student Union Atrium.
The group will also have a petition available which favors a state question to upgrade “safe rooms” at Oklahoma public schools. This has been a hot issue since the May tornado in Moore which leveled an elementary school.
The Young Democrats have been active on campus this semester, possibly inspiring the formation of new groups. The mission is to inspire college students to participate in politics at the local, state and national levels.
The group held a food drive in October and will soon be presenting donations to area senior centers. A hygiene supply drive for Durant Boys & Girls Clubs is in the works.
Kennedy, the nation’s 35th president, lost his life in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. An invitation-only event is planned at Dealey Plaza in Dallas on Friday, the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination.
