A man found dead on the railroad tracks last weekend appears to have died after being struck by a train, Durant Police said Wednesday.
According to Detective Drew Hale, police were dispatched at 5:55 a.m. Sunday to the railroad tracks near South First Avenue and West Main Street about a body on the tracks who was later identified as Elijah Gabriel, 20.
Police said he was face down in the tracks and it appeared he had been hit by a train. Earlier this week, police confirmed a body was found on the tracks but did not state how the man died because the case was under investigation.
Officers spoke with a train conductor who advised that he was traveling northbound on the railroad tracks at a very low speed. He observed a large object on the railroad, and upon further investigation, found it to be a human body. The train conductor contacted Durant Police and it was later determined that the earlier southbound Union Pacific train had unknowingly struck Gabriel.
The case is still under investigation.
