Two men were arrested Monday afternoon after they attempted to set a house on fire, according to the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office.

James Doyle Starlin, 24, Atoka, and Bradley Don Crowell, 37, Kenefic, were booked into the Bryan County Jail for suspicion of first-degree arson, endangering human life during arson and possession of methamphetamine. Starlin also is accused of attempting to elude a police officer.

Bryan County Sheriff’s Investigator Nathan Calloway said a woman dialed 911 at about 1:45 and said her house on Indian Road had been set on fire and two men in a pickup left the scene.

According to Calloway, two females were inside the home.

“One female looked out the window and saw flames and another female saw two men with hoodies,” Calloway said. “One man poured gasoline on the house while holding a lighter in his other hand.”

The men drove away in a pickup that did not have a tag, according to Calloway, and the pickup was later spotted on Caddo Highway by a Caddo police officer. A chase began, and one of the men threw something out the window.

A motorist saw this and stopped, where the person found a baggie containing a crystal-like substance and placed a marker for authorities, Calloway said.

The pursuit ended at Caddo Highway and Highway 22 when the driver stopped, according to Calloway, who said both suspects had gasoline on them.

Calloway credited Caddo police with the arrest.

“If it wasn’t for the Caddo police being able to intervene, arson is very difficult to prove,” Calloway said. “We probably wouldn’t have solved the case.”

Calloway also thanked the motorist for stopping and placing a marker at the baggie that was thrown out. The case is still under investigation and a report will be turned over to the Bryan County District Attorney’s Office.

The residents of the home used a garden hose to put out the fire.
