From Colbert Lady Leopard to Southeastern Lady Storm, Jacee Benett has proven herself invaluable in the pitcher’s circle for the Southeastern.

Last season the Lady Storm softballers had a dream season and found themselves in playoffs. Bennett “pitched” in and helped her team reach their goals with total of 8 saves on the season.

Those eight saves put her at the top of the heap amongest her peers on a national level, in closers. Bennett was awarded with the NCAA Softball Divison II Statistical Champion plaque for her domination in the pitcher’s circle.

Being a national leader means a lot to her, but her teammates mean much more.

“It’s pretty amazing. I was actually…shocked,” said Bennett. “Our team shocked everybody. We weren’t supposed to be in the national rankings. Mindy McElroy started all those games and I came in and closed them out for her. She had a big part in those games a well.”

Coming from Colbert, you might think that it would be a scary transition from high school to playing on the college level, but Bennett found out that her and her new teammates would “click.”

“Coming out of Colbert, I didn’t know what to expect.” said Bennett, “I didn’t know anybody, but our first games together… it just clicked. When we are on the field together, we support each other. If someone makes an error, it like, ‘It’s only one error.’ It’s all positive thoughts, we are all in this together. We have great team chemistry.”

According to Bennett, there is no “I” in team inside or outside the locker room.

“We all hang out, we are all together. We love doing things with each other. We have team dinners, Christmas parties and Halloween parties. We do a lot of things together that other teams don’t,” said Bennett. “And that, I think, helps us out the most. You can have a team with talent, but you won’t be near as good without chemistry. And we have both the talent and chemistry. Sometimes I think coach has a hard deciding who should start because of the talent on this team.”

Not only does Bennett have pitching ability, she also has the aptitude for computers as she is majoring in computer information systems. “I really like that, but I would like to a coach. I don’t think I could quite get away from softball.”

Sotftball, it’s in her blood.

A new softball season is only a few months away. The Lady Storm travel to San Antonio, Tx. for the St. Mary’s Tournament from February 1st through February 3rd.
