Silo outruns Calera in Bulldog season opener
By Zach Maxwell Sports Reporter
CALERA - Two of the top contenders for Bryan County bragging rights tangled Tuesday in an early season game in historic Bulldog Gymnasium.
Silo emerged on top in a 53-40 win over the host Bulldogs behind the strength of Leonard Sandler’s 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. Kendall Shives added 10 points and five boards.
Bradley McKnight led the Bulldogs with 13 points, including 6-for-8 free throw shooting, in his dad Brad McKnight’s deput as Calera coach. Braxton Barton kept the ‘Dogs close with 10 second half points.
Silo took an early 13-10 lead after one quarter despite a solid old-fashioned three-point play from McKnight. Calera made a second quarter run but it was quelled after a corner three from Sandler extended Silo’s lead to 23-17.
The Rebels kept up the pressure and took a 28-20 lead into the break. Silo scored the first six points of the second half to set the tone.
Barton, Johnathan Diamond and McKnight paced another Calera run, and Barton’s fall-away off an in-bounds pass cut the Silo lead to seven. But Silo wasn’t done.
Early in the fourth, Sandler connected on an alley-oop pass to Lance House to extend a 45-35 lead. The Rebels outscored Calera 16-9 in the final frame to get their first win of the new season.
House finished with nine points and five rebounds for Silo; Jarris Hamilton scored five; Andrew Bolin and Hunter Jackson had four each; Trenton Long had two points off a pair of first-half free throws.
Diamond finished with eight for Calera; Tanner Davis had six points and four boards; Conner Hamilton grabbed five rebounds and scored three points, all in the first half.
Calera (0-1) visits Tushka (1-0) on Friday. The Tigers are coming off a 56-36 win over Boswell last week and also played in Achille on Tuesday. Silo (1-1) hosts Roff on Friday. The Rebels dropped their first game to Preston in a 62-55 decision last week at the Earlsboro Festival.
