Second-half shutdown pushes Lady Mustangs past Silo

SILO - Rock Creek Coach Clyde Young knew he had to do something when Silo’s Mary Grider scored 24 points on his Lady Mustangs in the first half on Friday.
Grider only scored two the rest of the way, while Rock Creek’s Harlie Heflin and Kaci Haislip stayed hot and helped push the game to overtime. Michaela Stinson scored five of her 12 in the extra time to pace a 63-58 win for the Lady Mustangs.
“We made some adjustments, we came out and stopped (Grider) and that was the plan,” Young said. “Our girls just never quit. We missed some layups and free throws down the stretch, but in overtime we took over.”
Grider torched the nets early, scoring 10 points in the first quarter. Karissa Marshall’s steal-and-score pushed Silo ahead by six in the early going.
Grider scored 14 of Silo’s 16 in the second quarter, but Haislip answered with eight and the Lady Rebels held a 32-25 lead at the break.
Haislip cleaned up the glass in the third and scored eight points to cut into Silo’s lead. Heflin helped her with six to give Rock Creek a brief lead before Silo tied the game at 43 all after three.
Turnovers and missed shots plagued both teams in a 9-9 fourth quarter. Heflin’s three-point play early put the Lady Mustangs ahead 46-43 and the score would there for nearly four minutes until she went to the line and pushed the lead to five.
Riley Newton scored seven straight points for Silo to gain a 52-50 lead with 13 seconds remaining. Haislip put back a missed shot on the other end to beat the buzzer and force overtime.
Momentum stayed with the Lady Mustangs. Leading 60-58 in the final minute, Haislip blocked a runner by Grider, forcing the Lady Rebels to put Michaela Stinson at the line. She hit three of four to put the game away for Rock Creek.
Heflin led Rock Creek with 24, Haislip had 21 to go with a pile of rebounds, Stinson finished with 12, Macy Eiler had four and Deslanie Watkins saved her two points for overtime.
After Grider’s 26 for Silo, Hannah Bourne had 12, Newton 10, Karissa Marshall eight (four in OT) and Jewel Zukosky scored two in OT to go with several steals.
The Lady Mustangs are now 3-0 on the season and will host a scrappy Achille team on Tuesday in Bokchito. The Lady Rebels are enduring an 0-4 start with a road trip to Boswell (1-4) on Tuesday.
