Southeastern men’s golf will open the 2014 championship portion of its season picked to finish third in the Great American Conference as announced by the league’s preseason poll on Wednesday.
The Savage Storm tallied 46 points in the poll, trailing Henderson State with 50 points and one first place vote, and preseason first place pick Arkansas Tech which garners eight first place votes and 64 total points.
SE finished three points ahead of Harding in fourth, which was followed by Southwestern in fifth, just one point back of HU.
East Central was sixth with 25 points, Southern Arkansas seventh with 24, Arkansas-Monticello was eighth with 18 points and Ouachita Baptist rounded out the poll in ninth with 11 points.
The Storm are coming off a good fall season that saw them win the Texoma Championship and post top five overall finished in four of the five events, and top five finishes among regional foes in all five.
Marcos Sevilla Suarez leads a trio of players with average rounds in the 74’s, turning in a 74.17 average round, including a pair of rounds at 69 and a best finish of fifth.
Matt McIntosh is right behind at 74.20 with three rounds at par or better and a top finish of third, while Jeff Hunter averages 74.87 per round and has four rounds at par of better and a best finish of third as well.
As a team, SE has posted nine of its 15 team rounds under 300, with two rounds that were sub 290.
Southeastern will return to competition on March 2-3 when it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Las Vegas Classic hosted by Missouri-St. Louis.
