A fast start and fast finish highlighted Monday evening’s twin bill at the Durant Multi-Sports Complex as the Durant junior varsity split a pair of games with Lone Grove.
The Lions plated nine runs in the first inning of the opener to claim an 11-1 victory and then rallied with nine runs in the final two stanzas of the nightcap before coming up short 10-9.
With the split the Lions are now 9-2 on the season and will host Broken Bow for it’s next outing on Tuesday night.
In the opening contest Durant pounded out seven hits en route to nine runs. Matthew Knox contributed a double and Tyler Shade also had an RBI double in the frame. Cody Jones and Brayden Green chipped in two-run singles, Jake Smith had a run-scoring single while Tyler Stovall and Brody Morgan added singles.
The Lions tacked on a run the third with singles from Morgan and Jones ahead of a run-scoring hit by Shade. Carson Campbell drove in the final run in the fourth with a double for the run rule.
Jones worked all four innings, yielding a run on three hits for the pitching victory.
Game two saw the Lions spot the Longhorns a 10-0 lead through three and a half innings before fighting back into the game.
Dakota Finley doubled ahead of singles by Jones and Green before Shade delivered a three-run triple as the hosts plated six runs. They pushed across three more in the fifth spurred by a two-run triple off the bat of Green but left the tying run stranded at third base.
