They Durant Lions boys golf team competed against the teams in the east region in the Regional Golf Tournament held in McAlester.
The course was not in the best condition and the wind was blowing hard from the south which makes the course play more difficult.
The boys played some of their best golf of the year as a team but came up 11 shots short of making the State Tournament as a team.
“We had a goal of shooting a total score of 680 which we just missed, however that still would not have been good enough,” said coach Tanner Dupree. “I was surprised that several teams shot as well as they did. There were several teams, McAlester and Noble especially, who we have beat all season long and then they come out and have great days at the same time. I felt that we had to beat them both to get in and that didn’t happen,” Dupree said.
On the positive side, Trey Hunt was the 1st place medalist at the tournament. His opening round 71 gave him a 3 shot lead after the first round. He held on in the high winds of the afternoon round by making par on his last hole. That gave the Lions both of the 2014 Regional Champions.
“Trey works hard and loves the game of golf. It was bitter sweet but I couldn’t be happier for anyone than I am for Trey. This was truly one of the best seasons I’ve had as the golf coach at Durant,” said Dupree. “The kids worked hard all season, were very disciplined and respectful. They really represented our school and town well. Unfortunately we fell short of our goal and we are losing three outstanding young men to graduation but the Lions will be back. We will have Trey and a strong freshmen class with a year of experience under their belts and we will put up a fight next year,” said Dupree.
