BOSWELL — The Boswell Scorpions capitalized on some defensive miscues by the Colbert Leopards to take a 9-1 win in five innings.

After a scoreless first inning, Boswell got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the second. Blaine Brown reached on a fly that dropped right between the second baseman and right fielder. But he was thrown out on Blake Shults’ contact. Hayden Farmer then got to first on an infield error that also left Shults standing on third. Farmer advanced to second uncontested. He and Shults scored on another missed stop in the infield on Garrett Belvin’s at-bat.

Hayden Neal started the third inning for Colbert with a hard-hit ball the short stop didn’t handle. But he was gunned down by catcher Shults after Jacob Andrews struck out. Leadoff Zach Lovelace hit a single into right field. He was left stranded when Jared Tucker went down on strikes.

Boswell added two more in the bottom of that frame. It began with a Cameron Roberts double over the center-fielder. Connor Roberts then got on base when his fly to right fell off the fielder’s glove. With runners in scoring position, McKenna Pierce earned an RBI single with a fast mover to right field. Blaine Brown followed with a sacrifice fly to left.

In the top of the fourth, Colbert’s Ronnie Rickman was hit by a pitch. After Colton Bruce flied out to center, Tanner Lyday’s ground out to first moved Rickman to second. He scored when Kyler Weathers reached on an infield error. Weathers was left on first.

Boswell put it away in the bottom of the fifth, the Scorpions scoring five runs with two dead. After Connor Roberts flied out to center and Pierce grounded out, Blaine Brown reached on an infield error and advanced to second on a missed pick-off attempt. He made it home on a Shults double up the third-base line. Shults’ courtesy runner, Ben Dill, got to third on a passed ball and crossed the plate on Farmer’s single up the middle.

Garrett Belvin followed with his second single of the afternoon. At the top of the order, Caleb Brown aired one out to right. Misjudged by the fielder, the ball fell to the ground. Farmer and Belvin scored, and Brown stood at second.

Dusty Belvin then reached on an infield bobble and another infielder miscue on Cameron Roberts’ contact allowed Caleb Brown to score. Boswell had gone through the batting order at that point and the game was called.

Cameron Roberts got the win on the mound. In five innings, he racked up 11 strikeouts, walked one, hit one batter and allowed one hit.

Tanner Lyday took the loss. In four and two-thirds innings of work, he struck out three, walked one and allowed eight hits.

The Scorpions committed four errors in the game. The Leopards were charged with eight.

Colbert (4-7) next will travel to Wright City, slated for a 5 p.m. start Friday.

Boswell, now 10-5, is scheduled to go to Caney Monday with a 4 p.m. game time.
