It is no secret that Sydney Youngblood, junior at Durant High School, has a passion for the game of golf. The two-time state champion and University of Oklahoma commit can be found at the golf course most days, investing countless hours of practice into her game. What most people don’t know, however, is that she deeply desires to see a love of the game ignited in other young females.
As a result of that desire, she has created a one-day golf clinic for girls in Grades 1-12, which she calls a “Tee Party.” The clinic will be taught by Sydney’s own instructor, Kevin Johnson, director of junior golf at the Hank Haney Academy at Westridge in McKinney, Texas. Kevin will lead instruction 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at Chickasaw Pointe Golf Course. Cost of the clinic is $65 and includes four hours of instruction, a camp T-shirt, and drinks and snacks. All proceeds benefit the Durant High School golf team.
The clinic will cover a variety of instruction, including swing fundamentals, chipping and putting. Sydney will assist Johnson during the clinic. She said her contribution will be teaching the girls about the importance of honesty, etiquette and integrity in golf — the aspects of the game she loves most.
When asked what motivated her to conduct a golf clinic for girls, Sydney said, “I was blessed to have opportunities to play and compete locally, which led to me developing a love for this great game at a young age. I want to make sure the same opportunity is available for others as well. I want to see more girls playing golf.”
Sydney’s first tournament experience was at age 7, when she competed in the local junior golf tournament sponsored by The Durant Daily Democrat, which was conducted each year at the Durant Country Club. Sydney identifies that tournament as a pivotal point in her desire to pursue the game.
Sydney said she is very excited about this opportunity and extremely grateful for the support she has received from the community in creating this event. Sponsors include Barker Associates, Texoma Manufacturing Inc., Shamrock Bank and Jordan Insurance.
