We are now six weeks into the high school football season, so there’s not much time for local high school football teams to get into position for the post-season.

Taking a look at our three local teams, there are good indications for a couple of playoff runs in the area.

DURANT LIONS (1-5 overall, 1-2 in district)

That lonely “1” in the win column doesn’t hide the fact that the Lions are tied for fourth place in District 5A-3 with two other teams. Now it comes down to strength of schedule, which favors the Lions to make another post-season appearance.

Shawnee and Tulsa Hale are likely to lose to district powerhouses this Friday, and Noble will likely defeat winless Skiatook, putting four teams at 1-3 and tied for that fourth slot. The only probable upset would be Durant taking down McAlester at home this Friday, and such a thing would have the Lions in sole possession of the four-spot.

In any case, the Lions will still have a glimmer of playoff hopes, even if they lose Friday. But they will have to win out their final three games against subpar competition: Shawnee, Noble and Tulsa Hale.

CADDO BRUINS (2-4 overall, 0-3 in district)

The 2011 Class B champions are in bad shape to repeat the feat in Class A this year. They will finish off their 2012 matchups against the district’s “Winning W’s” this Friday with Wynnewood. Wewoka and Wayne join Wynnewood atop the district at a combined district mark of 8-0, leaving just one likely playoff opening available.

Stratford (1-1) has Wewoka this week, and Elmore City (0-3) will likely get a win against hapless Maysville (0-for-season). Caddo could be in the mix with an upset this Friday and a Homecoming win against Maysville next week.

KINGSTON (3-3 overall, 2-1 in district)

Kingston is still in good shape to lock up a playoff spot come November. In fact, they will leapfrog to the second or third spot if they beat Marietta (1-5), since the teams above them (Coalgate and Lexington) are playing each other.

But the road gets much tougher for Kingston after Friday, with district games against a rested and undefeated Davis team and always-tough Coalgate to end the season. Kingston should get in, but last week’s loss to Lexington could have made the difference between a home or road game.
