The Bryan County Health Care Coalition sponsored a barbecue luncheon to benefit Grandparents Raising Grandchildren & SODA Surprise a Senior programs on Friday Nov. 2.

Money from the event will go toward helping buy gifts for children on the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren’s angel tree as well as gifts for seniors who do not have family nearby.

Paulette Blankenship said that many of Bryan County’s senior citizens don’t have families. “We want to give them a little Christmas,” said Blankenship.

All food for the event was donated to the coalition by various business and individuals. Blankenship said that the community is very generous when it comes to donating to such events.

“I can’t say enough about this community,” said Blankenship. She said that the coalition had thanked all of the donors but felt that sometimes “thank you” is not enough.

This is the second year the coalition has held the event. The event was meant to begin at 11 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. that day.

More than 350 to-go orders were placed prior to the event. All to-go orders placed were met but people who came to dine were being turned away by 12 p.m.

Even with the help of approximately 10 businesses and individuals donating to the event, the food was gone by noon.
