Bennington survived a ferocious Eagles comeback on Friday to win their basketball season opener 52-51 at Victory Life Academy in Durant.

Tad Holt led the Bears with 15 points, Ryan Lott and Chance Haislip added 11 each and Issac Perez scored 10, including the game winner with 2.9 seconds to go.

Josh English put up a double-double for the Eagles with 20 points and 15 boards. Ethan Hollowell added 14 and nine, Zach Hestily scored six, Chase Stampley had six and Austin Waterman finished with five.

The Bears had a 14-point first half lead before Victory Life Academy was able to tie the game at 33 and go ahead as much as 11 in the fourth.

“We missed a lot of layups and free shots and let them catch up and go ahead of us,” said new Bennington Coach John Talley. “I was proud of our effort at the end. We did a good job of going inside and getting fouls to stop the clock.”

The two teams will double-dip in Choctaw County on Election Night this Tuesday. Bennington will visit Boswell and Victory Life Academy will travel to Fort Towson.
