One of the best finishes in recent memory will make the 2013 Bryan County Basketball Tournament go down as one for the ages.

Boswell took a 58-57 win over Calera to capture the tournament championship as Scorpion Markell Henderson and a trio of Bulldogs exchanged late three-pointers in a classic battle of wills.

Henderson scored 17 points to go with 13 rebounds and four blocks to lead Boswell, capturing his second tournament MVP award in three weeks. Cameron Collier added 16 for the victorious Scorpions (18-4).

Jonathon Diamond led the Bulldogs with 17, including three from behind the arc. Preston Barkley scored 14 and Braxton Barton had 13 for Calera. Conner Hamilton pulled in 15 rebounds to help the Bulldogs take a 46-33 advantage on the boards.

In the first half, Henderson delivered a pair of crowd-pleasing dunks to help Boswell build a lead as high as 10 points. A 15-9 first quarter helped the Scorps maintain a lead until the final minute of the game.

Barkley and Barton sparked a Bulldog rally in the third, but Boswell quickly rebuilt a double-digit lead and led 48-40 going into the fourth quarter.

Tyler Black hit a three to cut Boswell’s lead to 50-44, then Barton took a steal to the house to cut the deficit to four. Caleb Brown’s jumper completed a four-point Boswell run to push the lead back to eight.

Diamond hit a corner three, then Calera scooped up a loose ball which led to the first of a pair of Barkley triples which gave the Bulldogs (11-8)a brief 57-55 lead with 40 seconds to go.

The teams traded turnovers in a frantic final minute, until Henderson’s pull-up three rocked Bloomer Sullivan Arena at the 10 second mark. He then blocked Diamond on the other end, forcing Calera to foul while running off the final seconds.

The All-Tournament team included Cameron Collier of Boswell, Diamond and Barton from Calera, as well as Kendall Shives of Silo and Preston Rice of Colbert.

Boys Third Place – Silo 52 Tushka 46 (OT)

Leonard Sandler scored 18 and Kendall Shives scored six of his 12 [points in overtime to help the Rebels escape with a 52-46 win over Tushka in the third-place game of the Bryan County Tournament on Saturday.

Tushka took a 9-5 lead after one quarter and still led 21-16 at the half before Silo tied the game at 26-all. Sandler and Andrew Bolin scored from close range and benefited from defensive tenacity in the form of blocked shots by Jarris Hamilton and Lance House.

But a pair of threes from Tigers’ Lane Faulkenberry kept Tushka on top going to the final frame. There, an 8-2 Silo run pushed the Rebels ahead. Garrette Wall’s shot off the glass and a pair of free throws from Jody Moreland allowed Tushka to tie the game.

Wall came up with a huge block under the Silo basket to force overtime, where Shives was able to put the game away by getting into the lane and taking advantage of Tushka’s foul trouble. Silo outscored the Tigers 9-3 in overtime.

Moreland led the Tigers with 14 points, followed by 13 for Faulkenberry. Lance House added eight for Silo, Bolin had seven, Hunter Jackson four and Hamilton three.
