WAYNE - This clash between two reigning state champs favored the home team on Friday, as Wayne defeated Caddo 49-6.
The Bulldogs are now 5-0, with a 2-0 district mark as they look to defend their 2011 Class A championship. Caddo is now 2-3 at the mid-point of the season, with a dangerous 0-2 district record. The Bruins, 2011 Class B champions, are still adjusting to their re-classification from eight-man to 11-man football due to a slight increase in school attendance.
“They jumped on us quick, scored right off the bat,” said Caddo Coach Jeremy Proctor. “We had some adjustment problems at first which we tried to overcome. We had some turnovers in the first half that hurt us.”
Wayne was up 42-0 by halftime, grinding out yards on their fierce running game. Midway through the third quarter, Caddo quarterback Triston Paris aired out to Wyatt Wright, who got to the five yard line on the play of the game for the Bruins.
The big pass allowed Corey Savoy to scamper in for a touchdown and break-up the Bulldog shut-out. But Wayne scored on their next drive for the 49-6 final before the two teams played a scoreless fourth quarter.
“In the second half we got some identity back into us, and we played with a little more heart,”Proctor said. “It showed taht they have the ability to keep fighting. It’s what we’ve preached all year: Never quit.
“Now we’relooking to next week, so it’s back to work Monday,” Proctor said.
Caddo will host the wily Wewoka Tigers (4-1, 2-0) this Friday. They defeated Elmore City-Pernell 40-8.
