A special meeting of the Durant City Council was held at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The agenda included the acceptance of grants and one street next week.
Calvary Baptist Church requested the South block of 7th avenue between West Louisiana and west Mississippi streets to be closed from 5:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
This closure will be seen on Sunday October 28 through Wednesday October 31. The church is requesting the street closure during its event entitled “Are You Ready?”
This event will require an outdoor scene to be performed in the east parking lot of the church and may spill into the street.
For the safety of all involved in the event the church requires the street to be closed. The city council approved the closing for the event.
Council also approved a gift to the Durant Police Department by Ms. Aubry Mayor. Mayor has given to the Police Department in the past, even proving a work out facility.
“Ms. Mayor is very generous,” said Deputy Chief David Houser. The gift is a cash donation in the amount of $10,000.
The Durant Fire Department also received a gift. The city council approved the fire department to receive equipment and a grant from the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security (OKOHS) and Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA).
The fire department will receive a decontamination trailer, unit valued at $40,000, as well as a grant of $2,205.78 to purchase a generator for the unit.
Mayor Tomlinson also made mention that Durant Fire Battalion Chief Steve Stafford is resigning from the Fire Department. November 9 will be Stafford’s last day.
He will be going to Osage Beach Missouri to continue his career.
