COLBERT — Even with the throttle pulled back, the Lady Leopards are tough to beat.
Coach Chris Gillespie’s undefeated Lady Leopards coasted to a 58-22 win over the junior varsity Lady Buffs of Hugo on Thursday. Three Colbert players hit double figures (barely) during the opening round game of the Colbert Invitational Tournament.
The 6-0 Lady Leopards have won by an average of 27 points over their early season opponents. All the victories have been lopsided double-figure dominations except for a nine-point win over Byng.
Colbert will host Dickson at 7 p.m. Friday in the second round of the tournament. Winner faces Tishomingo or Broken Bow for the big trophy on Saturday.
Bailee Weger led all scorers with 11 points, including eight in the first frame; Taytiana Gray and Ginavee Mowles had 10 each; Haylie McGowan scored eight points in the second half; Katherine Hair added six which included a rare four-point play in the second half; Rachel Anders scored five; and it was two points apiece for Hunter Jackson, Darian Bradford, Samantha Cummins and Taylor Lyons.
Van Alstyne 54, Colbert boys 35
The Panthers went on a third quarter scoring spree to outpace the Leopards and take a 19-point tournament win on Thursday.
Van Alstyne (Texas) only led 12-9 after one quarter and held a meager 27-21 halftime lead before out-gunning Colbert 19-6 in the third quarter. The Panthers (3-4) will face Broken Bow at 5:30 p.m. Friday while Colbert will host Pottsboro, Texas, at 2:30 p.m.
Preston Rice led the Leopard scoring with 15 points; James Hair added seven; Charles Adams scored six; Kason Krob had four; Caleb Shoemake scored three.

Dra’ Smith scored 20 and Jacob Kemp added 16 for the Warriors, who will play Dickson at 8:30 p.m. Friday. The Indians were led by Tyler Cannon (17) and Preston Lovett (16).
Broken Bow 76 Pottsboro (Texas) 59
Kaleb Jones scored 23 points for the Savages, who will see more Texas action at 5:30 p.m. Friday as they face Van Alstyne in the second round. Pottsboro and Colbert will renew their Red River rivalry at 2:30 p.m.
Dickson 55 Hugo JV 22
Jeff Dodson scored 14 to lead the Comets, and Zach Campbell hit three from downtown for all nine of his points. Dickson will challenge Bonham (Texas) in the winner’s bracket second round at 8:30 p.m. today.

Destiny Justus (12) and Carolyn Lawley (9) paced the 12th-ranked Lady Indians to a tourney win and advance to play Broken Bow at 4 p.m. Friday. Tishomingo remains undefeated on the early season.

Makenzie Wright led the Lady Savages with 12 points in a close battle with Dallas Home School Athletic Association.
Dickson 71 Wolfe City (Texas) 33
Katy Custer turned in the top performance of the day with 26 points for the Lady Comets. Savannah Donica added 13 and Dickson will take on the host Lady Leopards at 7 p.m. Friday.
