A special meeting of the Bryan County Commissioners was held Monday, Jan. 14. Commissioners discussed issues with the Bryan County Jail project as well as a lease agreement for a vacant county building.
The commissioners discussed laying asphalt over an existing parking lot at the Bryan County Jail. At the moment the parking lot houses a mobile trailer that was placed temporarily.
The trailer is to be removed early next week, with work to place asphalt on the parking lot to begin shortly thereafter.
Commissioner Monty Montgomery suggested that the work be done with “county hands” rather than taking bids to contract the work out.
Montgomery said that he feels this would save the county money. The project is not foreseen to require extensive work because a parking lot already exists in the location.
The lot will need to be cleaned and asphalt placed. The biggest issue, Montgomery said, would be getting the asphalt level or beneath the curb that already exists.
It was decided that the Bryan County District Two road foreman would be the one to supervise the project due to recent success with similar projects.
Commissioners also discussed placement of a fence between the new and old jail. This would also mean a fence between the jail and detention center.
A handrail will also be placed outside of the sheriff’s office to ensure public safety. Montgomery said that the walkway outside the office is parallel to a drainage system.
The handrail will be placed to ensure visitors do not step off into the drain.
Issues with the lighting in the new jail have now arisen. The lighting contractor has not yet received the light fixtures that are set to be placed in the new jail facility.
Montgomery reported that this issue may slow progress due to low light working conditions inside the jail.
Also discussed in Monday’s meeting was a lease agreement for the south side section of the Plaza Building.
This section faces the Bryan County District Attorney’s office. Commissioners agreed to lease this area for $150 per month. Commissioners already have one prospective client.
