Durant High School will host the second annual Rookie Camp Thursday, Aug. 5 from 12p.m.-7p.m. inside the West Commons area of DHS.
Upcoming freshman students will tour the DHS building, meet faculty members, and discuss important issues pertaining to freshman before school starts.
Among the events scheduled for Thursday, students will attend sessions about AP classes, tailgate party, and guest speaker Eddie Slowikowski.
Slowikowski is a USA Gold Medal Winner and five-time All American Winner in Track and Cross Country. “This will be an exciting event to get the students motivated for the school year” said Regina Cowin, Student Council Advisor.
Teaming up with faculty and staff members for this year’s Rookie Camp are the 2010-2011 DHS Student Council.
Members of the council have met regularly this Summer to gather items and useful information for the camp.
“Thursday will be a day for the freshman to tour DHS and get acquainted with the facility” said, Student Council President, Nik Patel.
Sophomore Student Council member Chay John, attended Rookie Camp in 2009 and felt very pleased with the program. “I was scared of the school at first, but with the scavenger hunt at Rookie Camp, I was able to find my classes on the first day” said John.
Lori McCoy, Teacher at DHS, said that she has noticed a big difference that the Rookie Camp makes in students, especially on the first day of classes. “The students seem to be aware of the school surrounding and focus better in their classes” said McCoy.
If your child is a Freshman at DHS, the Rookie Camp will begin Thursday, Aug. 5, at 12 p.m. Students will be provided dinner at 5p.m.
