On Friday, the Durant Lions will make a 184 mile trek north to play it’s first district game against the a new foe, the Skiatook Bulldogs.
The last three weeks, the Lions and Skiatook have come up on the short end of their games and both remain winless at 0-3.
The Lions have suffered through a plethora of injuries and miscues, which has hampered the Lions deep into games. “Last Wednesday, we didn’t have seven starters practice because of injuries and we got some more hurt at Ada, and we still have a some dinged up.” said head coach Bryon Cordell.
Injuries still mount up for the Lions as they head into Friday’s game. Hunter Wines, Nick Leroy and kicker Matt Clemens (torn ACL) are out for the year. Kolton Blakely and Dakota Diessner both a have two sprain ankles. Will Engle missed last week with a bruised kidney and is day to day.
Durant’s rushing defense has looked weak against the run so far and Skiatook will look to expolit a make shift defensive and run the ball.
“They are a I-Formation team that likes to bust you up and run over ya and after watching the Ada game film, they are probably confident that they will be able to.” said Cordell, “So we got to fix some things and stop them. If you can’t stop the run, you can’t win. But we have had some hurt and others need to step up and do their assignments well. But we have made some changes and hope we will do better.”
The Lions offense has look great at times, but mental mistakes and untimely penalties have stall drives. In the last two games, Durant has own the time of possession but failed to put more points on the board.
Durant has been unable to put a complete game together. Offensive looks good in the first half then disappers and same goes for the defense.
“I thought our offense played pretty well last week and our defense let down a little bit. But the week before the defense played well but our offense let down. We got to get them both clicking in the same game.” said Cordell.
On defense, Skiatook likes to mix up looks on the defensive line to confuse their opponents.
“They show a three-man front and four-man front and they get after it. We got our work cut out for us. Big thing on our offense is that we have execute better.” said Cordell.
Lions fans are waiting for a complete game from Durant. And if they can start “clicking” at Skiatook, then Durant could be looking at it’s first win of the season.
Kick-off time will be 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Skiatook.
