On Monday Jan. 28, Southeastern Oklahoma State University held a freshman success ceremony at the SE Visual and Performing Arts Center.

One of the many students recognized was William Barnes.

Barnes is a 39-year-old U.S. Army Veteran and adult freshman at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. While in the Army, Barnes served as a sergeant overseas in Iraq.

As an adult freshman with a wife and children, Barnes has recently completed his first semester at SE with a 4.0 grade- point average.

Barnes said he joined the military at age 17 and retired in 2005 due to medical issues. Now he said he wants to get the education he missed.

Barnes is currently a political science major. Barnes said he hopes to get into politics after college and possibly run for congress.
