A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Kenefic man who is accused of stealing a child’s duck last month at the Bryan County Free Fair.

James Thomas Richard Nelson, 19, is charged with larceny of domestic fowl and knowingly concealing stolen property. According to court papers, Nelson stole a grey call duck during the fair in September.

The charges were filed following the completion of an investigation by the Durant Police Department and the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office.

According to an affidavit by Durant Police Officer Carter Mathews, Sheri Blakley said her daughter had shown a duck in the county fair. The duck was later put in a cage and about 15 minutes later, an unknown man was seen removing the $500 grey call duck from its cage.

On Sept. 21, Mathews received a report from Bryan County Sheriff’s Investigator John Bates stating the duck had been recovered after the owner received a tip that Nelson had given it to his girlfriend.

The affidavit states Bates received information that Nelson had bragged about stealing the duck. Bates went to a Kenefic residence and spoke with Nelson, who upon questioning, first said someone else gave him the duck, but upon more questioning, he agreed to write out a statement admitting that he stole the duck.

The duck was recovered from underneath the house and returned to its owner.

In other crime news, Durant Police Patrolman Blake Conditt investigated a burglary Monday at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation on North First Avenue. Ronald Harrison said an air compressor, 15 automobile batteries and welding equipment were stolen. Entry was gained by cutting a hole in a fence.

Durant Police Lt. Carrie Wyrick arrested a woman Monday evening for calling 911 and falsely stating that her neighbors were making a bomb. According to Wyrick’s report, the woman called the 911 center and said her neighbors at an apartment in the 1300 block of North Sixth Avenue were making a bomb and placing it in their door.

When Wyrick arrived to investigate, she spoke to the woman’s neighbors and they were attempting to repair the door knob because the door had been kicked in earlier in the day. Wyrick then spoke with the woman, who was intoxicated, and told her there was no bomb and to not call 911 again unless it was an emergency.

Approximately 35 minutes later, the communications center received four more calls from the woman who said her neighbors were making a bomb, the report stated. Wyrick then went back to her apartment and arrested her for misuse of the 911 system.
