A retirement party for former Sheriff Bill Sturch was held at the Bryan County Courthouse on Wednesday afternoon.
Sturch has retired after 20 years as Bryan County Sheriff. Friends, coworkers and family joined together to bid farewell to Sturch.
Sturch was presented with three gifts, an engraved hand gun, an over-sized sheriff’s star with signatures covering the back and a scrapbook with the sheriff’s logo on the cover.
Incoming Sheriff Ken Golden and Judge Mark Campbell both spoke during the party. Campbell said that Sturch “always worked so hard to serve the citizens of Bryan County.”
Campbell also reflected upon compliments from other counties that he had received about Sturch.
Golden said that the time spent working as undersheriff for Sturch was one of the best experiences of his life.
He said that he is nervous to be replacing Sturch, but has plans for the Sheriff’s office to do things it has not done before.
Golden said that Sturch will always be part of the Sheriff’s office and he may even ask Sturch’s advice from time to time.
“He was more than an employer. He is a good friend,” said Golden.
Sturch said the thing he will miss most from his time as sheriff is the comradely he felt from the troopers and agencies he worked with.
Now that he is retired he said he will be getting closer to his wife whose health is not well. They plan to do some traveling.
Sturch said he has already flown many places during his time in the military and plans to drive to destinations in the U.S.
Sturch said he feels confident in the abilities of Golden and the troopers he is leaving behind. “I think they’ll be OK,” said Sturch.
