The Savage Storm volleyball team played a game of superb superlatives on Saturday at Bloomer Sullivan Gym.
The 3-0 set sweep of new Great American Conference foe Northwestern was the first of many things for Southeastern this season: First 3-0 sweep; first home win; first conference win.
And Madelynne Cera was just two kills shy of a feat never accomplished in Southeastern volleyball, a very rare triple double. On a team once accustomed to regular double-doubles, this feat by the sophomore setter is all the more impressive.
She collected 18 assists, 11 digs and eight kills on Saturday to help the Storm stop a four-game skid. Garland freshman Megan Kunkel added 13 kills and nine digs to the team tally. The Savage Storm downed the Rangers 25-23, 25-18 and 25-12.
Storm volleyball Coach Jenn King was quick to praise Cera and Kunkel, the latter committing only two errors.
“To see her improve bodes well for the rest of this season,” King said. “And (Cera) is the first offensive setter that gives us the opportunity (for a triple-double). There are still a lot of things we are working on as a team. The biggest thing is keeping our errors low.
“We missed six serves in the first set, and in the third set, we didn’t make those errors and we could see the difference,” King said.
Emily Gentle added six kills, nine digs and five assists, while defensive specialist Taylor Benner had 10 digs and three assists.
Southeastern moves to 1-2 in early season conference play, with a 2-9 season mark. Northwestern (0-11,0-3 GAC) and Southern Nazarene are new conference members and will be ineligible for the eight-team GAC postseason tournament.
This leaves nine conference members vying for eight postseason spots, and the Storm win on Saturday could position them to avoid being the odd team out come December. SE visits Texas A&M Commerce on Tuesday before hosting Arkansas Tech on Friday night.
