WILBURTON – Ten high school athletes from the Bryan County Conference contributed to a four-game southern sweep in three sports during the 40th Kiamichi All Star Classic held on Saturday.
Eighteen athletes from Bryan County area schools were listed on the all-star rosters for baseball, basketball and softball games, all of which were held Saturday at Eastern Oklahoma State College. Injuries and schedule conflicts kept many athletes away.
Local athletes contributed to the four-game sweep by those grouped into the southern team from the 11-county Kiamichi region.
Here is a round-up, in order, of the games held on Saturday:
Softball: South 1, North 0
Tashona Robinson (Calera) drove in the game’s only run in the sixth inning, with Taylor Tedder (Antlers) scoring the run. This defensive slow-pitch battle was broken up by Robinson’s blast, which earned her the most valuable player award.
Brianna Akins (Rock Creek) was the winning pitcher, as she pitched a nine-inning complete game. “It felt good to play with some of the best in the state and pitch the whole game,” she said. Alexis Olgin (Colbert) got some time in the outfield.
Baseball: South 12, North 5
Coached by Lance Britt (Colbert), the south team showed solid hitting in their 12-5 win over the best of the north. Dillon Proctor (Caddo) pitched the first three innings, striking out five batters and getting some time at third base later in the game.
Proctor was 2-for-4 at the plate with a three-run double and a single. His double in the third inning was part of a six-run southern outburst which put them ahead for good.
Others pitching for the south included C.J. Gregory (Tushka), who logged three strikeouts in two innings as closer; Easton Cardenas (Colbert), who caught a foul pop up to end a scoring threat in the seventh; and Yukpa Bates (Broken Bow).
Gregory was 1-for-4 at bat with a single, and went 3-for-4 slugging. Defensively, he spent some time at second and third. Cardenas was 0-for-4 at the plate but put the ball in play every time. He also did some pinch running, and covered three infield positions at defense.
MVP was Clint Crane of Wister.
“It’s a reflection on our school and our players,” Britt said of his selection to coach the team. “It’s a testament to them. This is a very prestigious honor.”
Proctor, who will be playing football at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M this fall, said it was an honor to “play with guys you don’t get to play much.” Cardenas said it was “real fun” and he was glad Coach Britt did not make the team run after the game.
Girls Basketball: South 72, North 55
Morgan Wright (Colbert) scored five points on 2-3 shooting, grabbed four rebounds and dished out an assist. She hit a three-pointer in the first quarter which put the south ahead 15-11. Her fourth quarter put-back gave the south a 66-48 lead.
MVP was Whitney Brown of Oktaha.
Boys Basketball: South 70, North 67
Three Bryan County players contributed 15 points to help the south edge the north 70-67 and complete the all star sweep.
Keith Scruggs (Colbert) scored six points on 3-for-9 shooting, with four steals, two rebounds and an assist. He narrowly missed a third quarter dunk which would have been the play of the game.
Konar Hall (Caddo) scored six points on 2-for-7 shooting from the floor and 2-for-2 at the foul line. He also had five rebounds. Kolby Johnson (Caddo) scored three points on 1-for-5 shooting (1-for-4 at the line), and he also had four rebounds and three assists.
MVP honors went to Quinton Threadgill (Haworth), who will be on the Southeastern Savage Storm squad this fall.
