Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. Scott Hampton and Trooper Kyle Ince each received bravery awards last week during the 44th annual Highway Safety Recognition Luncheon in Norman.
Hampton and Ince serve in Troop E which is headquartered in Durant.
They received the OHP Chief’s award for bravery for actions that occurred on Jan. 1, 2012, in the early morning hours in Silo where there was a house fire with an occupant inside.
Hampton and Ince were first on the scene and they entered the house searching for the woman until they were overcome with smoke.
“We went in several times until the fire department came,” Hampton said. “We briefed them where we had searched and they went in and found her. She was flown by medical helicopter to a Texas hospital where she survived for another week until she passed away with complications from the fire.”
Hampton said it was a team effort that night to save her.
“Bryan County EMS, Durant Fire Department, Bryan County Sheriff’s Office and the Silo Fire Department all had a hand in attempting to save her,” Hampton said. “They all deserve a pat on the back.”
The luncheon was sponsored by AAA Oklahoma. Other troopers throughout the state, plus civilian employees of the Department of Public Safety, were honored for their service.
“When you hear these troopers’ stories and find out what they do on our behalf – and the dangers they face – it gives you such a feeling of pride in our Department of Public Safety,” said Chuck Mai, spokesman for AAA Oklahoma. “The men and women of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol put their lives on the line for us each and every day.”
