BOKCHITO - M.A.D. Ministries and the Abiding Word Church held a two and a half hour community event in Bokchito Sunday morning.
The event began a little before 10:30 a.m. on Sunday Aug. 26 and lasted until approximately 1 p.m. The event kicked off with brunch provided by some of M.A.D. Ministries members.
During the event, guests were offered free food and music. Children played on an inflatable waterslide and $1600 to $2000 worth of prizes were given away.
The Abiding Word’s pastor, Richard Rencher and his wife Shirley had contacted M.A.D. Ministries to ask them to host the event.
Both M.A.D. Ministries and the Abiding Word agreed that they wanted to host the event on Sunday morning to reach people who don’t already have a church.
He said he wanted to get out and show people that his church is there and what it is all about. Rencher said he wants to see how the community responds to this event before possibly planning another.
Pastor Rencher commented that almost all the people who attended were new faces.
Shirley Rencher said that her sister attends the M.A.D. Ministries church in Tishomingo, and gave Rencher their phone number to set up an event.
M.A.D. Ministries is a nondenominational ministry that goes out into the community to “show the love of Jesus in a different way,” said M.A.D. Ministries pastor Jim Branch.
M.A.D. stands for “Meeting people where they are, Addressing their needs and Directing them to the only one who can truly change their lives.”
According to M.A.D. Ministries pastors, Branch and Ivan Richeson, the D in M.A.D. is the most important but you cannot not get to it without the M and A.
According to the pastors, this is why they host such events. “We aren’t paying people to come out here,” Said Branch. “We are addressing their needs.”
Pastor Richeson said that they host these events with a “pay it forward mentality.” If a guest wins a prize that they do not want or need, the pastors encourage them to give the prize to someone who does need it.
Prizes at Sunday’s event included vouchers for such things as 50-60 pounds of pet food, $10 in gas, various amounts at grocery stores and free back adjustments at a chiropractor.
Cash prizes were also given to winners of “minute to win it” styles games. Some games had contestants trying to say things such as “OU Sooners” with up to nine marshmallows in their mouths.
At the end of the event Branch and Richeson gave a short message about having a relationship with Jesus just before drawing five tickets that each won a $100 bill.
