Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Rising Star Lodge of Calera announced a free motorcycle safety course to be held in November.

On Nov. 3, the OHP Safe Riders course will beheld at the Choctaw event Center to teach motorcyclists basic maneuvers and breaking skills to motorcyclists.

Registration for the course is now open at ohpsaferiders.com. The event will be free but only 30 seats are available.

OHP officer David Cravens said that if more than 30 people signed up for the course, another would be held to accommodate the overflow.

Participants must have their own motorcycle in good working condition. The motorcycle must meet all Oklahoma State equipment requirements including current insurance and registration.

Participants who successfully complete the safety course will receive certificates and will be eligible for discounts on their insurance for up to three years.

OHP has been setting up the motorcycle safety courses all over the state of Oklahoma. The Rising Star Lodge asked OHP to bring the course to the area.

The Rising Star set up the event with at the Choctaw event Center and is sponsoring the event. David Cathey with the Rising Star Lodge said he owes “a big thanks to the Choctaw Nation for providing the Venue.”

This is the first year the OHP has put on these courses however OHP plans to continue them next year.

These courses are made available through a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT).

According to Cravens, ODOT came to OHP with the idea. ODOT provided three years’ worth of funding for the courses to be taught throughout the state.

OHP must put on a minimum of 10 courses around the state in accordance with the grant from ODOT.

The majority of the courses will be done in the spring each year but will run into fall. The only time the courses will not be available will be in the mid-summer heat said Craven.
