A woman and her six-month-old daughter narrowly escaped a mobile home fire Saturday on East Main Street in Durant.

Krysti Dailey was napping in the living room and her infant daughter was sleeping in a bedroom on the east end of the trailer when a fire broke out on the west end.

“I opened my eyes and the room was full of black smoke,” she said. “I jumped up, got the baby and ran outside. There was thick black smoke coming out of every hole in the house. Trees were catching on fire.”

Her fiance Charles Duncan arrived shortly after firefighters responded to the blaze around 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Money Talks Mobile Home Park. Although distraught, none of the family members required medical attention at the scene.

Durant Fire Department was on the scene for more than two hours. Duncan said the fire department offered the family immediate assistance, and relatives were on hand to help as well.

Otherwise, the young family lost all their possessions in the blaze, including Duncan’s work boots and clothes, the baby’s car seat, clothes and a month’s supply of formula for the infant.

“This is the only thing I’ve got,” he said, pointing to the clothes on his back. “I have no clothes to go to work in. I just spent my last $10 on stuff to fix the house.”

Duncan said he recently lost his job at Dollar General, but has a job interview Monday but “there are no guarantees.”

The family will be in need of baby clothes for a six-month-old girl, a car seat, and Similac sensitive formula. To make donations, the family provided the following phone numbers: (580) 380-2001 or (580) 579-1983.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire, but the mobile home was significantly damaged if not destroyed in the fire.
